Џејмс Фенимор Купер (1789-1851) е првиот голем американски писател, наречен "американскиот Волтер Скот", во неговите авантуристички романи е претставен архитипот на американски херој - храбриот бел маж од дивиот запад, добро ја познава индијанската култура, кој води независен и слободен живот во близина на природата, туѓ на "цивилизацијата", која ја носат доселеници. Купер е автор на повеќе од 30 романот најпознати негови дела се "Последниот Мохиканец" [1], "Преријата", и др.

По женидбата, Купер живее мирен живот во својата фарма. Секојдневниот живот на младото семејство е речиси идилично. Еден ден, кога го завршил читањето на роман од англиската писателка Џејн Остин, Купер извикал: "Јас би можел да напишам поубав роман!" - И со овие зборови започнува неговата писателска кариера на еден од најголемите американски писатели. Првиот роман на Купер, "Внимателност" (1820) е имитација на Џејн Остин, не постигнува голем успех.

Вториот негов роман "Шпион" (1821), иако пак е имитација, овој пат на Волтер Скот, доживува заслужена слава. Во него се раскажува за Американската војна за независност - тема исклучително интересна за американската публика. Скот го инспирира Купер во осмислувањето на главните ликови - или вистински херои, или вистински негативци. На сличен елементарен модел се изградени и женските ликови - руси и невини или темни и страсни.

Во 1823 се појавува романот "Пионери". Со него започнува серијата на романи пишувани во продолжени на 20 години, познати под општиот наслов "Приказни за Кожниот чорап" (Leatherstocking Tales), бидејќи во сите нив учествува главен херој - Нати Бампо Кожниот чорап. Тој е белец, кој живее меѓу индијанци. Неговотo индијанско име е Јастребово око. Целата серија за Јастребовото окоги вклучува романите: "Ловец на елени", "Последниот Мохиканец", "Страсниот трагач" и "Прерија".

Во овие романи се вплетени одликите на реално постоечка личност - Даниел Бун, еден од првите пионери во населувањето на дивиот запад. Бун одржувал пријателски врски со индијанските племиња, ги познавал тајни патеки и планински премини, што му помогнало да ги пренесе белите доселеници кон западните, индијански територии.

Од 1826 до 1833 година Купер живее во Европа. Се запознава со Валтер Скот, но му е непријатно да го претставуваат како "американскиот Волтер Скот". Од сите европски земји најмногу се допаѓа Италија, а литературните кругови во Лондон му се чинат досаден. Во 1833 година се враќа во Америка. Славата му носи и непријатности. Со годините Купер станува жолчен и незадоволен. Почнува да губи пријатели поради нетактичност и недостаток на разум. Умира на 14 септември 1851 година. Неговата сопруга умира четири месеци по него.
