Медицинско волонтерство ― волонтерството во пределот на обезбедување медицинска помош.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Иако често се гледаат само лекари и медицински сестри кои се доброволци, поимот може да се користи и за доброволци за клинички испитувања кои се мотивирани од нефинансиски придобивки.[14] Медицинското волонтерство е воглавно гледано како „етички императив кој им служи на обесправените“.[15]

Откриено е дека мотивациите на медицинските доброволци, анализирани преку рамката за Инвентар на функции на доброволците, се фокусирани прво на димензијата на вредности, а потоа на разбирање, подобрување, социјална, кариера и заштита. Од нив, најважни се првите две. Со други зборови, најчеста причина за медицинско волонтирање е изразување или дејствување на важни вредности, како што е хуманитарноста и помагањето на тие со помала среќа и барањето да научат повеќе за светот и/или вештините кои често се неискористени.[16]

Краткорочниот медицинско волонтерство во странство, често во земјите во развој, понекогаш се критикува како медицински волонтуризам.[17][18][19][20][21] Ваквите активности се критикуваат кога ќе се споредат со алтернативниот поим за одржлив капацитет, т.е. работа направена во контекст на долгорочни, месно управувани и инфраструктури поддржани од странство. Оваа критика главно преовладува во научната и рецензирана книжевност.[22][23][24] Во последно време вакви критиќи објавуваат и медиуми со поопшта читателска публика.[25]
